Khayalethu Anthony and I. |
After scooping the award for Best Production at The Zabalaza Theatre Festival earlier this year, award-winning actor, Khayalethu Anthony is back at The Baxter Theatre, performing in his one-man theatre production, The Champion until 8, October 2014.
The planning process for The Champion started about 4 years ago.
"I did about 12-18 drafts and kept changing stuff,
" he says.
"Parts of the story, like growing up without a father is true. The story is not based on my life, but on the lives of many in the townships," he says.
Khayalethu met up with his father about 2-3 months ago in the Eastern Cape. He admits to still being confused and being filled with mixed emotions.
"I wanted my son to have a clan name and to belong somewhere," he says.
In a nutshell Khayalethu defines himself as a down-to-earth actor, director and writer. He likes simplicity. However, he hates fame.
"I would like people to treat me like the boy-next-door. I hate popularity\fame. I am scared people might become critical. I prefer keeping my personal life private,"he says.
Having had the honour to act in Mandela;Long Walk to Freedom, it remains one of his career highlights.
"It was my first time on set and meeting Idris Elba was great,
"he adds.
However, he admits that challenges he face in the industry include not having guaranteed work.
Nerves is certainly not a thing of the past for Khayalethu.
"I always get stage fright before I go on stage . I try to not think about my performance and relax."
