So, it turns out that actor and comedian, David Isaacs is not the extrovert he appears to be on stage. David is well-known for his portrayal of Boeta Gamat and Washiela in Joe Barber.
We meet up at The Baxter Theatre main theatre, the classic Joe Barber set appears beside us, providing the perfect setting for our interview .
He's quite surprisingly,shy in person.
''I am made up of a lot of things,''he says speaking in a low tone of voice.
People are responding to their version of David, which is not necessarily who I am,''he adds.
It's hard to believe Joe Barber, one of mzansi's most popular theatre comedy shows has been around for 15 years.
So, what has been the secret to success?
''We're very resilient and tell
personal stories.
People enjoy the show for different reasons,''he says.
David teamed up with Oscar Petersen and director, Heinrich Reisenhofer
back in 1999 to create Joe Barber. Since then, it has won numerous awards such as the Skouerklop Award in 2008, for Best Contribution to the Suidooster Fees. In 2003, it also won a KKNK Award for Best comedy production.
Joe Barber 6 enjoyed great success at The Baxter recently. The production process took a year and a half. Research
began as David and his co-actor, Oscar Petersen found something they feel strongly about. They used the aspect of leadership as a focus point. After discussions, 2 weeks before the show began they started rehearsals. Currently,
research for Joe Barber 7 & 8 is being done.
Well-known for his role as a muslim woman , Washiela - Having grown up amongst a lot of different woman, David reveals, Washiela is based on a number of people.
David reveals that he has career highlights on a daily basis. However, he reveals that his
ultimate career highlight was playing a role in the movie Skeem.
''As an actor everything changes, the thing is to find ways to be open to change,''he says.The advantages of being an actor includes
dealing with yourself a lot. A person has to maintain their spirituality and emotions.''My work becomes my world,''he adds.
Performing is a small part of the experience, off stage.
The disadvantages of being an actor, according to David is that it involves a lot of pressure. It does not pay much either.
David is originally from Parkwood in Cape Town. He went on to study drama at UCT Drama School. He has appeared in films such Skeem, Cape of Goodhope and Visa Vie and TV productions such as 7de laan, Colour TV, SOS and Fishy Feshuns.

If you weren't an actor what would you be?
A musician. I play the piano, guitar and trumpet.
When you not on stage, what do you do?
I enjoy ridding motorbikes.
The best thing about living in Cape Town is...
The people and the fact that Cape Town is the oldest city ,yet it is so undiscovered.
Hot chocolate or coffee? Coffee.
The first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I drink coffee.
1 thing people do not know about you ?
I am a qualified breakfast chef.
What is your hidden talent?
I can be an extrovert.
What is your star sign?
Aries.
What are your future plans?
I would like to do a lot of music, theatre and TV.
I would like to play in all fields.
Message to aspiring performers?
Tell your own story - no story is not worth telling.
