Former President Nelson Mandela's passing on Thursday, 5 December 2013 has left the world heartbroken and shocked, even though it was expected at some point in time.
However, politicians, celebrities, ordinary citizens from around the world has since taken the opportunity to celebrate his legacy, as a struggle icon during the apartheid era and beyond. South Africans have truly united in celebrating his life. It pretty much feels unreal and will take a long time to sink in, even after he is laid to rest on Sunday, 15 December 2013 in Qunu in the Eastern Province.
Memorial services across the country are taking place this week, including venues such as the FNB Stadium in JHB on 10 December 2013, where an official memorial service will be held. On Wednesday, 11 December 2013 a memorial service will be help at CPT Stadium.From the 11th-13th December 2013, his body will lie in state at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.On Saturday, Mandela's body will leave Waterkloof Air Force in Pretoria for Qunu.
PROFILE:
His 1st name, Rolihlahla if translated means, "pulling the branch of a tree’’in Isixhosa. The name Nelson was given to him by his missionary teacher in Primary School, in order to keep up with up with the school’s ethos, being that every school child must have a Christian name. As a child, Mandela was told stories about his ancestors during the war of resistance,which lead to him being inspired to contribute to fighting against apartheid. He completed his schooling ,matriculating from the Wesleyan Secondary School. He went on to study at the University of Fort Hare, where he was later expelled, due to engaging in student protest action but still managed to finish UNISA in 1943.Mandela went on to study further, completing his LLB degree through Unisa in 1989.
- In 1944 he founded the ANC youth league with Oliver Thambo and Walter Sisulu.
- In 1964 he made a startling speech declaring that he is prepared to die for a democratic S.A.He was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
- In 1980 the ANC launched the release Mandela campaign.
- In 1985 Mandela refuses to be released from prison. That same year, he was hospitalized for prostate surgery. In 1988 he also suffered from TB.
- On February 2, 1990 the ANC is unbanned. In that same year, parliament begins repealing apartheid laws such as the group areas act.
- In 1994 he is sworn in as president of South Africa. He was later re-elected but stepped down.
