Wenn in Lalaland, a powerful one-man show that combines music, story telling and drama, takes to the stage at Die Suidoosterfees on Friday 29 April.Written, directed and performed by the prolific and versatile Julian Wenn, the 30-minute production takes place from 17:00 to 17:30 at the Artscape Piazza Plesier Tent. Entry is Free.
Wenn in Lalaland takes place on any intimate stage. Julian Wenn with his guitar and loop station combines his showmanship to call upon his audience to take a walk through the avenues of his mind, and the way in which he sees the world. Brave yet fearing, strong with a touch of paranoia, he takes them through his life, his work, his time, his love, his confusion; perhaps his dark side which is exposed through jabbing at social qualms through comedic monologues that turn into conscious acoustic musical hymns. The knotted rope with which he has the audience tugging on is wet, slippery, and at times hurts their hands, yet he cannot allow them to let go and neither do they want to. A general leading with truth and force, for as much as he pushes at them, they simultaneously pull back harder into Lalaland. The niche that this powerful piece has created stands alone as a new form of storytelling. Well-known South African actor and Director Neels Clasen had this to say about the production: “Wenn in Lalaland is a fresh insight into the country we live in, through the eyes and music of the multi-talented Julian Wenn and yet, refreshingly different. He focuses on the aspects we too often forget about: compassion and love. The show is truthful, sincere and compassionate as he weaves stories and music beautifully into a piece that revives one's spirit and feeds the soul. Wenn is a yet undiscovered jewel in the treasure chest of our complex country, who takes you on a journey from start to finish; one that will stay with you days after the final note. A must see, suitable for anyone willing to open their heart to the possibility of loving the things we all too often view with judgemental eyes.”
Q and A with Julian Wenn
Please tell me about your one-man show?
Wenn in Lalaland is my first one-man show. Where I command the stage with my own lyrics, songs in the genre of acoustic soul. I take the audience on a journey through my eyes. And the way in which I see the world. The dialogue is brave and crazy. It evokes emotion and will have you questioning a few things. I lead with truth and a little fire force. The rope is sticky slippery and hurts their hands a little, yet as much as the audience wants to let go, they keep tugging harder at the rope into back into Lalaland.
How does it feel to be part of the Suidoosterfees this year?
I am excited to be on the Suidooster stage. I have been wanting to get onto a local festival in Cape Town, after the Darling Voorkamerfees in Darling in 2015 with 12 shows, and the Suidooster is such a wonderful festival to try out this new work. I look forward to seeing the reactions from the audience. And meeting the talented performers from our province, while sharing the platform with the big names in our dynamic entertainment industry.

Please tell me about what work-related projects you are busy with at the moment?
Things are looking up, I have just finished a screen acting course and have landed two roles. One international and soon you will be able to catch me on Kyknet for a role on the popular Kyknet series called Boland Moorde season two. Oh, and then I am looking to give birth to this 2-year-old foetus of a music album, which I am thinking of calling, conscious acoustic soul.
