Lunch with...
Rhythm City's bad boy, Jamie Bartlett a.k.a David Genaro

Jamie gives the inside scoop on his life on-screen & behind the camera

"A celebrity is not who I am, a celebrity is totally different to an artist.’’
Love him or hate him, Jamie Bartlett better known as local drama, Rhythm City’s David Genaro, since 2007 is one of Mzansi’s most popular on-screen bad boys.

So,we meet up at a cool  restaurant ,where he offers to pay for my lunch too, which was a pretty cool gesture, as it is not every day that a famous person decides to pay the bill.

“David is a larger than life operatic character," he says speaking in a low tone of voice, because he only lets his voice fully project when on stage.

Behind his bad boy persona, he is  quite an adventurous person.''energetic, cheerful and open-minded''are just some of the words he defines himself by. He is also a lover of motor cars and nature, especially flowers and trees.

He is quite a family-orientated guy too, and shares a close relationship with his 16- year-old son, Hector, who attends St.Johns College in Johannesburg. Hector is not fazed by the attention Jamie receives, after growing up with both his father and mother, actress, Camilla Waldman in the spotlight.

The late Phillip Seymour Hoffman remains one of Jamie’s role models. He proudly lives by the motto "Reach beyond your grasp."

A typical day in Jamie’s life, when in Johannesburg consists of waking up at 4.00  am, leaving the house at 5.30am , eating, dressing and getting his makeup done on set.

''Very little of what I do is directed,''he says, as he is able to add his own metaphors to his scripts.
He adds that the only similarity between David Genaro,  and himself is that they have a good sense of humour. Behind the scenes, he remains good friends with  Pam Andrews. They have a lot in common, and even share a birthday on the 9th of July. KB, as well as the directing team are also some of the people he shares a close relationship with off-screen.

Having played numerous bad boy roles, he is adamant that he will never take on a  good boy role.

Jamie feels that he  is more well-known outside of South Africa, with Rhythm City being broadcast to a total of 22 countries, reaching millions of places such as Cameroon, Ghana and Addis Ababa.''Once someone in Addis Ababa asked me:Are you Jamie Bartlett?,''he says.

He admits that he is attracted to all kinds of women, no particular race at all.

Jamie is adamant that he does not believe in celebrity culture. "A celebrity is not who I am, a celebrity is totally different to an artist,'' he says.

One of his career highlights thus far, is his current role in Death of a Colonialist, because  it is a challenging role to play.
Born in Maidenhead,  Bekshire in the United Kingdom he comes from a normal, working-class family, and moved to South Africa when Jamie was a little boy. From a young age, he has always wanted to act. ''I just act - I do not sing or dance. Sometimes, I get embarrassed at my own singing,’’ he jokes.

Jamie went on to study Speech and Drama at the University Of Cape Town, and later completed his post-grad master classes at the Chrysalis Theatre Acting School in London.

1 on 1 with Carl Wastie

Carl Wastie and I. Carl Wastie 1 on 1 with Carl Wastie So, I got to sit down and have a good chat with energetic media personality, Carl Wastie at a popular restaurant in Cape Town. Known for his dynamite (literally, after all, dynamite does come in small packages), who cam miss his funky mohawk? Carl is friendly and super-humble . Who is Carl Wastie in a nutshell? He is a Cape Town-based individual that feels that humility is more important than talent. I studied psychology at UCT and later worked at a video shop. People from Good Hope FM saw me at an MC gig, all thanks to the people at the video shop. So, I could say, I started my career in the entertainment industry out of a video shop. You can't believe in luck and hard work at the same time, because lucky people are those who are at the right place, at the right time. Hard workers put themselves in the right place and get there at the right time. Since then, people Good Hope FM spotted me and then Expresso . I
