"I think the way that you go out, not just your journey in life, but the way that you go out and the way you make your exit is so important"

29 year-old Reeva Steenkamp seemed to have had it all…A sparkling career as a gorgeous, leading South African Model and was set to become a rising television star!

The first episode of the Tropika Island Of Treasure Season 5, reality series in which Reeva features as a celebrity contestant, was aired in memory of her life on Saturday, 16 February 2013. Her vibey, young life got cut short on Valentine's Day, Thursday, 14 February 2013. A day dubbed by many as one to spread love amongst loved ones, but for the family, friends and fans of Reeva Steemkamp , it will always be remembered as a shocking, dark day she was killed.

Reeva’s sudden death has left South Africans shocked, as well as the rest of the world. News of her death spread as far as New Zealand, United States Of America as well as The United Kingdom. At the peak of her career, Reeva was excited to feature  in SABC1's Tropika Island Of Treasure, season 5 .The show started with a brief tribute to her, where images of a candle and a rose was displayed. A decision was made not to pull the plug on the popular reality series, where teams of celebrities and contestants compete for the grand prize of one million rand. Permission has apparently been granted by Reeva’s family to air the show , according to her cousin, Sharon Steenkamp her last wish was for them to watch the show.

Filmed on location in Jamaica last year, Reeva appears  with popular South African celebrities, which includes rapper AKA, as well as Singer Mario Ogle. When asked to describe herself as a contestant she described herself as a brainy, blonde, bombshell. In the first episode aired on Saturday ,Reeva ended up amongst the strongest players in the wet 'n wild challenge.

"I think the way that you go out, not just your journey in life, but the way that you go out and the way you make your exit is so important," Steenkamp says in the video. "You either made an impact in a positive or a negative way, but just maintain integrity and maintain class and just remain true to yourself. I take home with me so many amazing memories and things that are in here, that I'll treasure forever,’’she added .

She was described by my many as a sweet girl."We are absolutely devastated."She was a wonderful, caring, amazing girl. We are completely shocked by the news. This is a very difficult day for us,"said  an emotional Jane Cilliers, of  Ice Models Management which Reeva belonged to.

Besides her rising career in the entertainment industry, as well as her rising celebrity status, she was also an entrepreneur owned her own business exporting fresh produce.Reeva had her eye set on working on new projects, as well as bagging smaller television roles.

According to reports, she was expected to deliver a motivational speech at a high school  in Johannesburg on the day of her death, to encourage learners to remain positive  and educate them about abuse. She was going to speak out about  a previous abusive relationship she was in, at the hands of an ex- boyfriend.Hand written notes of Reeva’s expected speech has emerged which read "No matter how many people say that they "love" you, if you do not love your person, then you will never step outside of the physical you." Her speech said that it 'took some serious soul searching to remind myself of my value in this world' .The physical you can only do so much if your mental you is lost inside of all the confusion.'

She was quite an introvert and enjoyed spending quality time  with friends and family, cooking, reading a book, horse riding and loved animals such as cats, dogs and horses.Reeva took part in her first horse race event at the age of 2. Her father Barry is a well-known horse trainer. Her future plans included becoming a full-time lawyer, as she is in fact a law graduate, having obtained a bachelors degree in Law at the Nelson Mandela Metropolatin University."It's still a big shock to us. I've known Reeva for years and she was an incredible, beautiful soul. It's shocking. An amazing girl has gone too soon,"said former model Shashi Naidoo of Alushi model agency in Johannesburg ,which Reeva belonged to.

Reeva, an only daughter to her parents Barry and June was born in Cape Town and moved to Port Elizabeth at a young age. She attended St Dominic's Priory School , where she matriculated in 2001.She started modeling at the age of 14 and  was a finalist in the Weekend Post Faces of the Future competition in 2004 and in The Herald Miss Port Elizabeth contest in 2005.’’She was a beautiful and friendly girl who will be missed, ‘’said St Dominic's Priory School principal, Greg Stockells. She was known as a smart learner  and talented athlete, who enjoyed competing in sports. She went on to study law at  the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2005. Despite breaking her back in a horse riding accident, which lead to her being hospitalized and rehabilitated in her final year of studies. She applied to the Bar in late 2011, and hoped to be a qualified legal advocate by the age of 30.

Reeva moved to Johannesburg 6 years ago, after being scouted as a model and became the first face of Avon cosmetics, South Africa. Since then, she had to travel between Cape Town and Johannesburg, shooting some of South Africa’s leading brands such as FHM.Toyota, Clover, and  jewellery company, Sivana Diamonds. Reeva modeled for Italian brand, Zui, as well sometimes even doing up to 6 flights a day.Reeva is also a former FTV South Africa presenter, as well as a popular cover girl.

In a previous interview with FHM, she described herself as a very structured, organized person. Hagen Engler, a former editor of the South African edition of FHM magazine, for which Steenkamp had been the cover star, said he had known her since around the age of 15 in Port Elizabeth, where they both grew up. "She was an amazing girl, a really intelligent person," he said."She went into the modeling industry and had a mature understanding of it. She had a funny sense of humour, like a guy's sense of humour. She was talented and was starting to succeed. The girl was really going places."Her death came as a "hammer blow", Engler said. "I heard the news … then it was like: 'I know her, oh my God.' I've been trying to process it. It's a real tragedy that such a bright girl has gone."

Reeva who is said to have allegedly been killed by former boyfriend sport icon,Oscar Pistorius at his home in Pretoria on Valentine's Day,  had only been dating him  for a few months and made their first public appearance together at the South African Sports Awards, held in November last year.Reeva brushed off their relationship at the time by saying they are just friends.Oscar, charged with murder is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, 19 February.

A memorial service in celebration of Reeva’s life is expected to take place on  Tuesday,19 February 2013 in Port Elizabeth. Her family has asked that their privacy be respected as they mourn her death.

Hours before her death Reeva spoke to zalebs.com

Do you remember your first crush did you ever have the courage to let the person know how you feel?At varsity, I had the biggest crush on a guy in my class. He turned out to be gay (another classmate broke the news to me) and is now one of my best friends.
Have you ever had a really bad dating experience? I once had to get a restraining order against a guy. I went on one date with him and on the way home to drop me off, we had to “pop by his place to let the dogs out” as he’d forgotten. He didn’t own any pets and after I told him there wouldn’t be a second date, he moved back home with his parents because ‘his house smelled of my perfume',psycho.

Your most romantic songs?
Dirty Dancing is one of my all-time favourite movies, so several songs off the soundtrack come to mind:• Time of My Life (not the Black Eyed Peas version though!),Unforgettable is another fabulous golden oldie (a classic love song)My more recent ballad would have to be “See Beneath Your Beautiful” (it’s a song that has a lot of meaning to me).Whitney Houston made beautiful love songs as well, like those off the Bodyguard soundtrack (reminds me of the 80s).

This beautiful soul’s message to ZAlebs, “I’ve realized that although Valentine’s Day can be a cheesy money-making stint to most people, it’s a day of expressing love across the world. It doesn’t have to only be between lovers, but by telling a friend that you care, or even an old person that they are still appreciated.”

Tributes pour in…

Carl Wastie and I. Carl Wastie 1 on 1 with Carl Wastie So, I got to sit down and have a good chat with energetic media personality, Carl Wastie at a popular restaurant in Cape Town. Known for his dynamite (literally, after all, dynamite does come in small packages), who cam miss his funky mohawk? Carl is friendly and super-humble . Who is Carl Wastie in a nutshell? He is a Cape Town-based individual that feels that humility is more important than talent. I studied psychology at UCT and later worked at a video shop. People from Good Hope FM saw me at an MC gig, all thanks to the people at the video shop. So, I could say, I started my career in the entertainment industry out of a video shop. You can't believe in luck and hard work at the same time, because lucky people are those who are at the right place, at the right time. Hard workers put themselves in the right place and get there at the right time. Since then, people Good Hope FM spotted me and then Expresso . I
